HELP THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE OF FLORENCE
The Great Synagogue of Florence, inaugurated in 1882, was designed by Marco Treves and built thanks to the bequest of Baron David Levi, who asked that a large part of his estate be used to build a “Temple worthy of the city of Florence”. With the losing of its historic Synagogue, located closely to the Duomo in Via delle Oche and now a hotel, the Great Synagogue remains the only Florentine Synagogue. The dome, which is now copper green but originally golden, is recognizable from afar and now part of the beautiful skyline of Florence, visible even form Piazzale Michelangelo, standing out to the eye because of its color among the red roofs, on the right of the great dome of the Duomo.
Over 40 thousand tourists and Jews from all over the world come every year to visit the majestic structure and pray in it.
The building has needed various restoration works in recent years: in addition to the most recent work on the façade and the securing of the Tower, with contributions also from generous donors, work has been done on the dome and conservation work on the stucco and marble floors inside.
Due to its age and special features, the structure of the temple would need many minor restorations works. Every donation dedicated to its preservation will be important to continue keeping alive this place of worship, a precious jewel of art and the beating heart of Florence’s Jewish community. Thank to your help, one of the most beautiful Italian Synagogue’s will be appreciated to the fullest.
