COMMEMORATIVE TOMBSTONE PROJECT
The Shoah Commemorative Tombstone is a prominent monument located in the Garden of the Synagogue of Florence, recently dedicated to Daniela Misul.
The tombstone bears the names of 248 victims of the Shoah, who are remembered each year on the Day of Commemoration established by the State of Israel. In addition to honoring members of the Jewish Community, the tombstone also serves as a powerful point of reflection for tourists visiting the Synagogue.
We believe it is the responsibility of the Community—and of all of us—not to let this memory fade, either from our hearts or from its visible, tangible form.
CURRENT CONDITION
The white marble tombstone displays the names of victims of Nazi-Fascism, composed of raised bronze lettering and some inscriptions engraved in Hebrew, the latter filled in with black. The overall state of preservation appears fair.
However, some damage is evident: the marble shows signs of surface erosion and the formation of black stains, likely caused by smog settling on more porous areas, along with a modest presence of microflora. The engraved letters are illegible due to both the fading of the black pigment and the presence of stains in the background. The raised bronze letters show the typical oxidation of bronze. At the base of the tombstone, there is also a stone bench with inscriptions, which shows similar damage to that described above.
The total cost of the full restoration is €4,500.
